Media Literate storytelling & decoding at a new NYC middle school!

The Middle School of Innovation in Brooklyn opened in 2025-2026 with 6th grade, and Principal Eileen Herusso is building media literacy into the fabric of the school from day 1.

Students interview each other about year 1 at MSI.

Students interview their peers as they tour electives.

TMS was excited to be there to work with their amazing Library Media Specialist, Ms. Angela Hargrove, who is building Critical Media Decoding as core to student reading of any text — see a book cover decoding activity we worked with her on below.

Student voice and choice is core to the school vision, students choose from a variety of electives during the year, one of which was media and editing where TMS worked with Ms. Eve Dockery, MSI’s in house filmmaker, to have students deconstruct a promotional video from Emerson College (storyboard activity below), and repurpose the format to tell their story. TMS was also on hand to facilitate student videographers to film MSI’s ‘Innovation Day’ where students tour electives. TMS scaffolded the editing process and we published to the school website to begin the school video archive, which will tell the MSI story as it unfolds through the student perspective!
