Students document the Social Emotional Environment at PS51

Students collaborate with TMS to share their day-to-day culture of caring for themselves and each other.

Dr. Min Hong, Principal at PS 51, Bronx STEM & Arts Academy, asked The Media Spot to collaborate with her students to create a video capturing how they experience the SEL culture at PS 51.

Dr. Hong and her SEL ‘All School’ Team have cultivated a system of daily routines and practices to support an atmosphere that centralizes the emotional well being of her students and staff. Students got behind the camera and interviewed each other, teachers and staff, and TMS edited the video with input from the SEL Team.

The resulting video demonstrates how authentically engaged the community is in the culture of mindfully caring for each other. The video will be featured by Yale University Center for Emotional Intelligence as supporting material for schools interested in implementing their RULER SEL approach, which was integral in the building of PS 51’s culture.
